“I would say absolutely work with her. She will be able to validate that your loved one is there. She will do it in a kind and gentle manner. She got my dad's humor and goofiness. How all him and I did was laugh. She talked about how my dad would always be in the yard talking to neighbors. She talked about his job and how we had a gathering where his employees were sharing stories. That day was a blur for me, but what i remember most is each employee telling me what my dad did for them. I specifically remembered thinking wow I didn't realize my dad impacted this many people. I don't know how he had the energy when he cared for all of us and his sisters. She talked about how he wasn't materialistic and would keep the same clothes and car for years. The one thing I probably didn't give enough validation to her was the writing. She said my dad said I had a story to tell and I have literally started writing a book a few times about a particular issue that I overcame. That I am still overcoming. She just was very obviously communicating with my dad and I feel like she got how special of a person he was with valuing people and relationships above everything. Oh and my childhood and how he would give us memories despite all the negative things we had to deal with. She also knew about me being the only one left with my siblings all having tragic passing. She used the word disconnected for me during all of this and that is exactly how I describe it. Just so much personal stuff that isn't anything you would find anywhere other than talking with my dad or my significant other ( and even they don't know much of it). You have a gift Bex. “Holy crap. Bex described my mother as someone with a 'victim mentality' who made everything about her. She said my mother made a lifelong identity from her own adverse childhood experiences. This is eerily accurate. Bex said my mother had many relationships and marriages, none of them lasting long. My mom was married and divorced three times with many live-in boyfriends in between. She said some siblings put big distance between themselves and my mom, with some going no contact (my sister went completely NC). Apparently, my mother lacks the accountability and fresh perspective that others gain when they cross over. This makes sense, since my mother spent much of the session describing herself--some things never change. I'm really glad Bex mentioned my mothers, ahem, learning curve, indicating that while she's starting to recognize how I (and my siblings) suffered by her hand, Bex says my mother has a ways to go on her journey of understanding. I'm not holding my breath. By some miracle, Bex was able to capture the essence and trauma of my childhood, saying I had to learn how to fend for myself and "white knuckle" my way through everything. She accurately described my struggles in school, difficulty with relationships, and issues with my self-worth. Indeed, most of my adult life has been spent in therapy. Finally, Bex described my "gift" of reading the emotions of others, empathy, and understanding. While I've never thought of it as a gift, she was correct in saying that I do use this in an attempt to help others--much of my 20 years as a teacher has been with urban schools and I currently teach in a self contained middle school special ed classroom with students who are "emotionally impaired", mostly due to trauma. The down side, however, is that I struggle to control this and can "feel" the tragedies of our world (war, politics)--Bex mentioned that I take this globally. I'm stunned at how Bex was able to describe and discuss the complexities and nuances of my mother and of my upbringing. She was specific and incredibly accurate. My experience with Bex renewed my faith in spirituality and left me with a sense peace.”
